Nitrogen Fill Tires

Let’s start with some basic science: Nitrogen molecules are bigger than oxygen molecules. When you fill your tires with compressed air, the smaller oxygen molecules are more likely to escape through the semipermeable tire liner—thus losing tire pressure at a faster rate. By comparison, the larger nitrogen molecules prolong the tire’s pressure, meaning you can go longer without needing to refill.

Tire wear can also be delayed with nitrogen-filled tires. Whereas oxygen expedites rubber oxidation, nitrogen acts as an inert gas, which can be used to avoid oxidation and other chemical reactions. As a result, nitrogen slows the rate at which tires wear over the course of their lifespan.

• Do my tires already have nitrogen in them?

If you’re unsure, it’s easy to check. Whereas a typical air-filled tire carries the traditional black or chrome valve cap, nitrogen-filled tires will likely have a green valve cap and/or include a white “N2” emblem.

• Will I get better gas mileage with nitrogen?

As is the case with air-filled tires, you’ll get better fuel economy with each tire properly inflated. That being said, nitrogen doesn’t provide enhanced gas mileage compared to its air counterpart.

• Does nitrogen provide a safer driving experience?

There’s no distinct difference in safety or ride quality with nitrogen-filled tires. It’s critical to keep your tires properly inflated, whether using air or nitrogen.

• Can I fill my nitrogen tires with regular air?

Yes. If your tire pressure is running low, it’s safe to fill your tires with a mix of air and nitrogen. However, to maintain the long-term benefits of nitrogen, you should visit our service center to refill the tires with nitrogen.
